This Cookie Policy explains how Revision Genie uses cookies and similar technologies. We've written it to be clear and easy to understand, especially for our younger users, their parents, and teachers.
Cookies are small text files stored on your device that help websites remember information about your visit. Think of them like a note that reminds us who you are and how you like to use the site.
When you first visit Revision Genie, you will see a cookie notice with two options:
Essential only - we will use only the cookies that are strictly necessary for the site to work. None of the services described in section 4 are loaded at all. Vercel's cookieless page-performance measurement still runs, because it sets no cookies and does not identify you (see section 7).
Accept all - in addition to essential cookies, we will load ContentSquare, which helps us understand how the site is used so we can improve it. It may set its own cookies (see section 4).
Your choice is stored on your device and can be changed at any time by clearing the cookie notice or your browser's site data for revisiongenie.com.
These are needed for the website to work properly and keep you safe, and so they do not require your consent under UK law:
Session cookies: temporary, removed when you close your browser. Used to keep you signed in for the current session and to protect login forms.
Authentication cookies: keep you signed in across sessions (NextAuth session token).
Preference cookies: remember your theme preference (light/dark) and that you have dismissed the cookie notice.
Security cookies: protect your account and prevent cross-site request forgery on sign-in.
Creator referral cookie: if you arrive via a creator link, we remember the most recent creator code for up to 30 days so a discount can be applied at checkout.
Approximate location cookie (rg_geo): remembers the rough area your connection appears to come from (country, region and city only, worked out from your internet connection by our hosting provider, never from your device's GPS and never containing your IP address). We use this in aggregate to understand where our users are, for example a count of visitors per city. It expires after 24 hours.
Live visitor count (stored in your browser, not a cookie): so we can see how many people are on the site right now rather than how many tabs are open, your browser stores a random id that resets every 24 hours. It contains no personal information, is never linked to an account and is only used to group open tabs while you are browsing.
How you found us cookie (rg_acq): set on your first visit, it remembers the domain name of the website that linked you to us (never the full web address you came from), any campaign tags that were in the link, and the first page you visited. If you create an account we record this on it so we can see how people find Revision Genie; otherwise it simply expires after 30 days and nothing is kept.
If you choose Accept all, we load one additional third-party service. If you choose Essential only, it is not loaded at all - not even in the background.
Analytics - ContentSquare, which helps us understand how people use the site (for example which features are used and where people get stuck) so we can make it better. ContentSquare may set its own cookies and is governed by its own privacy policy at contentsquare.com/privacy-center. We use it only to improve the product - never to advertise to you or to build a commercial profile of you.
Revision Genie is designed for school students and we treat all traffic as potentially under the age of consent.
We never use cookies to advertise to you based on your browsing behaviour, or to build a commercial advertising profile of any user, regardless of age.
Any analytics we use is only to understand and improve the product, never to advertise to you.
You can change your cookie choice at any time by clearing your browser's site data for revisiongenie.com - the cookie notice will reappear and you can choose again.
Essential cookies cannot be turned off in-app, as they are needed for the site to function and to keep you signed in. You can still block them in your browser, but you will not be able to sign in or save your preferences.
Some third-party services we use may set their own cookies on pages where they are loaded:
Google Sign-In - used only on the sign-in page if you choose to log in with Google.
Microsoft Sign-In - used only on the sign-in page if you choose to log in with Microsoft.
ContentSquare - product analytics, loaded only if you accept all cookies, to help us understand and improve how the site is used. Governed by its own privacy policy at contentsquare.com/privacy-center.
Stripe - used during checkout and on the customer portal to process payments and prevent fraud.
Vercel - our hosting provider may set cookies for load balancing and aggregate site usage.
Vercel Speed Insights - privacy-friendly, cookieless measurement of how quickly pages load, running on every page whichever cookie choice you make. It measures page-loading performance only: it does not record which buttons you pressed or how far you scrolled. It sets no cookies at all, including no advertising cookies, and Vercel states that it does not identify you or track you across websites.
These services follow their own privacy policies and are bound by data processing agreements with us.
We never sell cookie data.
We do not use cookies for personalised advertising.
We regularly review our practices to meet safeguarding and privacy standards.
